SignatureENALC

Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and shaped by life between the Sahara, Cádiz and Madrid, Enrique Alcides has developed a visual practice informed by his long experience in film and on stage. This dual perspective—constructing an image and inhabiting it—positions the body as measure, archive and surface of transformation.

He has participated in video installation and multidisciplinary projects, and his visual work has featured in group exhibitions in Madrid. His current research explores the passage between painterly matter, code, light and immersive space.

Biography

Portrait of Enrique Alcides against a warm red background

As a child, between the Canary Islands and Western Sahara, I believed the world was made only of sky, ocean, and sand. Yet the dunes changed from one day to the next. That early experience contained the roots of my interest in the infinite, the mutable, and in what appears stable while constantly transforming.

Language was my first tool, as a playwright and storyteller: I built narratives to give order to experience. When words were no longer enough, I carried them into the body through theater and film, turning them into presence, time, and space. Later, the same need expanded into collage, watercolor, painting, altered photography, moving image, and generative systems.

My practice does not change medium; it expands the same question. From word to body; from body to image; from image to mutable system. Collage fragments and recomposes reality. Watercolor introduces fragility, emotional filtration, and a partial surrender of control. Altered photography manipulates memory and reconstructs bodies. Painting restores matter, presence, and physical resistance. Code produces repetition, variation, multiplicity, and identities that never fully settle.

I came to understand my Asperger’s as a retrospective key: it does not explain the work, but helps me recognize a persistent way of perceiving, questioning, and organizing the world. I work with what changes without ceasing to be; with the provisional forms through which we try to inhabit ourselves. The artist I am contains all these layers and is, at the same time, the seed of another I cannot yet imagine.

Artistic statement

Every identity is an image in progress.

I work with images that remember, mutate and contradict their appearance. I am interested in the moment when a figure can no longer be explained through a single reading: when the face becomes landscape, colour adopts a behaviour, matter seems to breathe, or the viewer discovers that they, too, occupy the interior of the work.

Painting remains a physical root, but no longer a limit. Code, projection, movement and installation allow me to turn a visual intuition into a living system. I do not seek to illustrate a future; I prefer to create the conditions in which several futures can be felt at once.
